Refractive Lens Exchange

What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE, is a vision correction procedure that replaces your eye’s natural lens with a custom intraocular lens designed to improve focus and reduce dependence on glasses or contacts. RLE is often a great option for individuals who aren’t ideal candidates for laser vision correction, such as LASIK or PRK, especially those who are older or have very high prescriptions. By correcting common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and even presbyopia, RLE can provide clearer, more reliable vision tailored to your needs.

Is Refractive Cataract Surgery Right for You?

Certain patients may find refractive cataract surgery especially beneficial. Those with astigmatism often see excellent results with toric IOLs, while patients who have had LASIK or PRK in the past may benefit from the flexibility of light-adjustable lenses. Highly active individuals who want freedom from glasses for sports, travel, or work are also strong candidates, as are younger cataract patients with healthy eyes who are motivated to reduce their reliance on glasses.

On the other hand, not everyone is an ideal fit. Patients with advanced eye disease, such as severe glaucoma or macular degeneration, may not achieve the desired results. Likewise, individuals with unrealistic expectations — for example, hoping for perfect vision at every distance without compromise — may be better suited to other options. Finally, those with untreated ocular surface conditions, like severe dry eye, will need to address these issues before considering surgery.

The best candidates for refractive cataract surgery meet both medical and lifestyle criteria:

The right candidate is someone who:

What to Expect with RLE

Step One: Before anything else, we take a precise 3D scan of your eye. This gives us a clear picture of its unique structures and allows us to create a treatment plan just for you.

Step Two: Your eye’s natural lens is gently removed by our experienced surgeons.

Step Three: A specialty intraocular lens (IOL) is placed to replace your natural lens. This new lens is designed to reduce or even eliminate your need for glasses or contacts.

RLE vs. LASIK: What’s the Difference?

Both RLE and LASIK can improve your vision, but they work in different ways:

RLE replaces your eye’s natural lens with a clear, artificial one. This is often the best option if you’re over 40, struggling with close-up vision, or have been told you’re not a good LASIK candidate. An added bonus: RLE also prevents cataracts from developing in the future.

LASIK reshapes the cornea with a laser to correct issues like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
