How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)?

The Light Adjustable Lens is an advanced type of intraocular lens (IOL) used during cataract or lens replacement surgery. Unlike standard lenses, it can be adjusted after surgery with special light treatments to fine-tune your vision. This means your final vision can be more accurate and personalized.

Many patients can reduce or even eliminate their need for glasses. However, some may still need them for certain activities, such as reading fine print or working on the computer. The adjustments give us the best chance of meeting your personal vision goals.

Most patients need 2–3 light treatments, followed by a final “lock-in.” These are done in the office over several weeks. The exact number depends on how your eyes heal and your visual needs.

Yes. The light treatments are carefully controlled and have been proven safe in clinical studies. They do not harm your retina or other parts of your eye.

Yes. Until your final lock-in treatment, you must wear the provided UV-protective glasses at all times when you’re awake. This prevents unwanted changes to the lens. You can remove them to sleep, shower, or apply eye drops.

Typically for about 4–6 weeks after surgery, depending on how quickly we complete your adjustments and lock-in treatment.

The advantage of the LAL is that we can fine-tune your vision after surgery. If further adjustments are needed, we can continue until your vision is optimized. In rare cases, other corrective procedures may be considered.

The LAL is considered a “premium” lens technology, so insurance usually covers the cataract surgery itself but not the added cost of the lens or adjustments. Our staff will review the exact pricing and financing options with you.

This is considered a premium technology, and insurance payers do not cover this. Therefore, this is an out-of-pocket expense. We will provide a breakdown of the costs at your pre-operative consultation.

Please call our office to inquire about pricing or make an appointment with our cataract surgeons for a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for this lens.
